It’s no secret that the transportation industry is one of the leading contributors when it comes to carbon emissions–an unfortunate fact that requires major change throughout the industry. At Ancotrans, we are committed to making the necessary changes for a better future and are constantly on the lookout for new solutions. And our portfolio of sustainable transportation options reflects this.

Our ambition to reduce our environmental impact is ingrained in our company’s DNA. We have always been forward-thinking, and in sticking to our tradition, we have set a goal to achieve 100% carbon neutrality by 2040.

To turn this ambitious vision into reality, we are focusing on implementing new initiatives focused on carbon reduction while maintaining our existing projects. In this article, we will delve into our offsetting programs and green reduction initiatives, offering insights into what Ancotrans brings to the table. And hopefully help you choose the right eco-friendly container transport option for your business.

Electric fleet – a major mile marker towards sustainability

Our route to carbon neutrality gathers speed with a new fleet of electric trucks. We are proud to introduce 10 Volvo Electric FH 4×2 T trucks to our fleet this year and plan to incorporate even more in the near future. The impact of just one electric truck with a 22-ton load is substantial, reducing CO2 emissions by 35 tons annually. Multiply that by ten, and we begin making some significant progress towards our 2040 goal.

To further support this transition, we are actively seeking partnerships with customers to install charging stations at their sites. We are also working on agreements with local electricity providers to secure stable kWh rates, which will help drive down costs further.

In addition, we aim to source all electricity used in our transport network, including that of trucks, trains, offices, and facilities, from renewable and eco-friendly sources. These factors will help create a container transport option that not only drives down carbon emissions but is also a cost-effective and consistently reliable transportation option for our customers.

Better fuel for a better future

In addition to our growing electric fleet, we will soon introduce the use of HVO. HVO is a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional diesel oil, designed to reduce CO2 emissions significantly. HVO, or Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil, is a synthetic biodiesel derived from renewable sources. Its carbon footprint measures at an impressively low 0,11 kg CO2/km (or 0.35178 kg CO2/liter fuel*), meaning that a HVO truck has an 85% lower CO2 emission compared to a standard diesel truck.

By utilizing HVO alongside our electric vehicles, we will make substantial progress in reducing our environmental footprint and ensure that our customers have multiple sustainable transportation options to match their exact routes and needs.

Intermodal – a diverse route to eco-friendly transports

Another environmentally conscious transportation offer is our intermodal service–ANCOmodal. Intermodal container transport, which lies at the heart of ANCOmodal, combines multiple modes of transportation to streamline logistics, minimize fuel consumption per cargo unit, and significantly reduce carbon emissions. Many of our trains are already running on electricity in addition to the trucks used in last-mile operations.

Driven by these environmental advantages and increased shipping efficiency, we are actively expanding ANCOmodal throughout our European network. The ANCOmodal service is a comprehensive one-stop-shop, seamlessly integrating a flexible, efficient, and reliable intermodal network with our final mile trucking delivery expertise. As a result, ANCOmodal allows you to transport goods in a more sustainable and efficient manner at a lower cost.

The ANCO forests are growing. And fast.

As our carbon reduction initiatives keep growing, so do our offsetting projects – the Ugandan and Danish ANCO forests. Each tree planted in these forests can absorb 3 tonnes of carbon over a 20-year period. With the recent addition of 1 hectare of trees in our Danish AncoForest, the total number of trees planted across both projects has surpassed 43,000. This remarkable effort has allowed us to compensate for over 21,000 tons of CO2 emissions.

In addition, you can actively contribute to offsetting the carbon footprint of your container transport through our climate-compensated option. If you choose this service, we will apply a green surcharge equivalent to the cost required to offset the CO2 emitted for each kilometer of transport. That surcharge is then used to plant trees in our Ugandan AncoForest project. Providing you with a simple and cost-effective way to reduce your environmental impact.

DRIVING FOR A BETTER CLIMATE

We’re planting a forest in Uganda. Join us!

From offsetting to reduction

Our road to carbon neutrality is primally fuelled by our many initiatives focused on CO2 reduction. However, we still offer our customers the option to offset carbon footprint with our climate-compensated transportation option. Link to Anco Forest.

By having both carbon offsetting and sustainable transportation options, we will reduce our impact on many different fronts and provide our customers with a wide range of choices for greener container transport. Because together, we can drive the positive change needed to create a better future.
